Firefox Multiple Profiles with Windows7

Here is an image caption of how to
get multiple profiles in Firefox 3.6.12.

I've seen different explanations on
how to do this - but on Windows7
the path has to include the (x86).

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox>"firefox.exe" -P

If you typed the command correctly the
"Firefox - Choose User Profile" will
pop out as soon as you hit enter.

Now you have multiple profiles just
like in Seamonkey etc..

Note: the -P command is uppercase.

There are other ways to do
this but, I found this
the most simple.

Note: If you want to choose
which profile on load,
de-select
"Don't ask at startup".

OpenDNS increases speed with security

Too much protection
can slow down your connection speed.

This is one product that I found that
not only speeds up your connection
but adds another layer of protection.

OpenDNS gaining popularity, OpenDNS.com a free
service (paid as well to include more features)
that provides a set of rock solid, super-fast
DNS servers to anyone who wants to use them.

Don't get stuck with whatever DNS Server your ISP provides...

"OpenDNS operates datacenters at the most strategically connected
intersections of the Internet around the world."

Along with the increased datacenters you can blacklist
unwanted junk sites that generate pop-ups and pop-unders.
This adds a layer of security because your browser is
not fighting off unwanted malware, again increasing speed.

There are videos to walk through the setup process,
I would suggest a few extra steps as your setting up your
router and use the added layer of hardware protection.

Many routers come with a default password for
example my Linksys router uses "admin".
While changing this password to something else
would keep you computer from becoming a Zombie.

Another change can be helpful such as
"Number of Address:" which the default is
50. That means 50 computers can use your router.
Change that to the number of computer being used
such as 4 which I'm using. This is under the
"Basic Setup" section.

OpenDNS will add another layer of protection
but it can really be used as a security audit.

I don't think most home users ever think of
this phase of protection. Once a software
firewall with some anti-virus protection
is installed they're safe.

An audit will let you know how well
those products are working using OpenDNS.

Use OpenDNS

One place I like to check for overall global network connection or
a global network weather report is the Internet Traffic Index.

The Internet Traffic Report monitors the flow of data around the world. It then displays a value between zero and 100. Higher values indicate faster and more reliable connections.

This could be akin to local and national weather.

note: I do not work for or have an affiliation with OpenDNS

The Good, the Bad, the Weird on DVD

Got a chance to watch this DVD and it was great!
If you like action adventured this is for you.

A South Korean western film with subtitle?

That description turned me off from giving
this movie a 2nd look. But was told by
some friends that it was exactly my
taste - wasn't sure how to take that
statement. As the formula seemed
like a mess - Not! It was a great ride.

In bullet fashion (pun intended)
questioned the plot:
* A Western by a South Korean
movie company in Manchuria?
* Subtitles for an action flick,
for the dyslexic?

Never ending action shoot outs, funny fight scenes and
clever setups for each. If your turned off by blood-n-guts
not to worry, just enough to let you know it's an action movie.

In a nutshell - The Weird is a guy with a sense of
humor, he is dressed like a WWI fighter pilot and
packs 2 pistols that appear to be German Lugers.

The Bandit a Japanese version of "Prince the Rock Start"
with the same attitude but his instrument is a blade.

Then (The Good), a Clint Eastwood type - slick and cool under pressure,
handles a rifle as if was invented just for him.

Avast! Internet Security 5.0 Win7 & WinXP

Avast! Antivirus is one of the most popular free programs
at download websites.

After using it myself for about a year my subscription from
another security program was about to expire.

Since the free version worked so well I
purchased their one year license subscription.

The cost is average compared with
similar type programs. The purchase
will protect 3 computers.
which makes the Avast license cost effective!

The subscription version includes anti-viurus, firewall,
IM and P2P shield. It's a complete security package.

Works with other firewalls and antivirus scanners as well.

I've tested Avast! 5.0 on both Windows XP and
Windows 7 with no problems.

For the extra concerned who want maximum protection,
I have been running Avast 5 along with Zone Alarm
and PC Tools Firewall - for testing I ran all 3 on
both Windows XP and 7.

What combination worked together in detail:

XP Home:
Avast & PC Tools Firewall & Zone Alarm

XP Pro:
Avast & Norton Internet Security

Windows 7:
Avast & Macaffee Secrity Center & PC Tools Firewall

Note: Of course each security program complained
during intallation of have another

Avast! 5 Internet Security is one of the best
software purchases I made in years.

Notice: I have no afflilations with
any of the software companies mentioned.

Super Anti Spyware scans fast

Is just what it claims to be Super!

Gets other malware & virus that other programs miss.

It is very fast and doesn't eat up memory resources
so you can continue working on other projects while
it scans for malware, this is a big plus.

The subscription offers, real time blocking,
Schedule Custom Scans, Automatic Updates
highlighted in red.

Was first introduced to this program by
a Microsoft support person.

Last September 2009
an Windows XP Update attempt
the server page produced an error,
that my "BITS" or "Background Intelligent
Transfer Service" was not enabled and
would not allow me to update.

After trying several attempts,
the support person suggested that
I should check for malware.

He suggested Super Anti Spyware.

I never heard of it before?
Already had 2 popular anti viurus
and spyware programs running.

Questioned his judgment but
I downloaded the free version.

Within seconds it immediately
found 4 malware files on my
WinXP SP3. Removed them, restarted
my BITS service.

5 stars for this program for sure...

AnVir Task Manager manges multiple process

A Manger all in one utility

I'll hit the highlights of what I like
about this product.

Sartup Manager controls which programs you enable.
The fewer the better as this will increase boot time.
Highlights what the file is and dependencies.

Applications view much like Task Manager and you
didn't need to press 'Crtl & Alt & Delete' to access.
This lets you know what process as running
in the foreground and background.
Might be good for malware discovery.

Process viewer displays and describes network
connections UDP TCP, ports and applications.
Tab selection for drivers, DLL, as well
as 'Product Information'.

The Services Control:
This is the reason I tried this
program was for the
Services monitoring precess. Lets you
know what .NET services state,
allows you to start or stop a service
at any time. I've had an issue
managing these services lately
from a MS Service Pack 1.1 corruption.

For those who love utility programs
you just found heaven. Those new
will learn more about your Windows
system.

Pros: All in one package of having
what would be several utility
programs in one. I can't over state
that enough.

Cons: Could be over whelming at
first as it displays many windows
all at once.

A bit of a bug in the focus and
mouse over. In that when you
move the mouse pointer over
a line or feature it wobbles,
feels strange when working with
important functions of your system.

Dot Net Do Not corrupt my XP

Been fighting with an issue that
started in December 2009. Recently, exacerbated to the point
of having almost every Service on my XP SP3 down.

Audience: Power User non-programmer.
For programmers use Windows PowerShell
or Ruby http://win32utils.rubyforge.org/

This is an ongoing process,
so will making some changes to this post as I begin
resolving this issue. I'm posting this to help others
who might be experiencing the same problem or something similar.

05-Feb-2010

What Happen?
Bottom line is my XP SP3 .NET has been corrupt
by a earlier version Service Pack 1.1

Fixing the corrupt Dot Net service,
registry and system files. Note: This
post assumes you can edit the registry,
understand Admin Policy, Services svchost.exe
and the core Windows file extensions.

.NET and Services are the main fix
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056
This article explains the Service (svchost.exe).

Kept getting the following update, in my auto updates:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

Already had Service v2.0.50727_X86 running.

Several of my Services stop working,
the fix is:
To restart "services.msc"...

Start > Run > services.msc which opens

Services
Microsoft Corporation
Version: 5.1.2600.0
"Starts, stops, and configures Windows services."

I searched MS Knowledge
Base and found this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974469

"How to obtain help and support for this security update
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary."

Microsoft offers free phone support.

I called the number and got immediate support which was
professional, knowledgeable about the Service Pack 1.1.

The support team walked me through restarting the
the most import Services.

The next step was having the support person
log on to my PC and uninstall Dot Net completely.

Then reinstall the latest Dot Net version.
This help some but was still unable the
keep service type to stick to the previous
setting after each reboot.

After several attempts the support person
suggested that I run "sfc /scannow" which
helps restore corrupt core files by the
Service Pack 1.1.

Start > Run > cmd which open
a DOS window > type sfc /scannow

http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

The support team was helpful after a week of
attempts, the support person came to a conclusion
that too many core files and registry have
been corrupt that .NET MS Support, thery're working
on fix for the Service Pack fix 1.1 and
would be available in the Updates Website.

Until the Service Pack is available I was
going to have to learn every .NET Service
Start Up Type, register every Service
files within the registry and
Path to executables such as:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Many web sites provide very helpful
info and a handful of programs assist in
restoring my system.

I had many programs that are completely dependent
on the .NET Services that they won't run include..
Norton System Works
Norton Internet Security
Carbonite backup
IP Switch WS FTP
Google Update
Spyware Doctor with Anti-Virus
Windows Installer (cannot in or uninstall)

This is an all in one package.
* Event Log
* Service "Start Up Type"
* Task Manager "Process
"notice the number of svchost.exe (Service) files"

Alternative programs that used.
No claim that these are the best,
they worked during the
restore process:

* PC Tools Firewall Plus
'Loads slowly at reboot
but does a good job once
started'

* SUPER_AnitiSpyware 4.3
* Avast anti-virus program 4.8
'Needs to restarted each reboot'

Windows and Linux programs run on both

I've put together a list of some open source programs
that run on both Linux and Windows. I did this for
those who might be on the fence about trying Linux.

Hopefully, this will make your transition easier
since you've had a chance to run these programs
on Windows.

This list isn't random, these are programs
that I currently use or have tried and all in
stable versions.

Miro - video player and podcast client, iTunes-ish
http://www.getmiro.com/download/for-windows/

KompoZer
- WYSIWYG html editor
http://www.kompozer.net/

KDE - GUI desktop project for many standalone
applications and smaller projects
http://windows.kde.org/

Konqueror - Web Browser packaged only with KDE
http://www.konqueror.org/

AbiWord - Microsoft Word
http://www.abisource.com/

VideoLAN
- Media Player video formats (H.264, Ogg, DivX, MKV, TS,
MPEG-2, mp3, MPEG-4, aac, ...)
Physical media (DVDs, VCD, Audio-CD).
http://www.videolan.org/

GIMP
- (GNU) Graphic Image Manipulation Program, Photoshop
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

PeaZip - file and archive manager ZIP, RAR, TAR ISO,
http://peazip.sourceforge.net/index.html

Portable Ubuntu Remix is an Ubuntu system running as a
Windows application Linux OS.

Wingrep - Advanced searching for Windows
http://www.wingrep.com/

Vim - is a highly configurable text editor built
to enable efficient text editing.

One thing that frustrates users at a command line is
remembering what to enter to get things going.
Vim & Wingrep will serve you better if you understand
regular expressions.

The end of Time is Here 2010

There is a good  possibility that
you are reading this post, there
is a way to find time all
around you.

In Google Destop 'Add gadgets'
there 8 sections on clocks all
with a little twist on display
or a voice to tell you the time.

Also, there is a fair chance you are
reading this post with a
computer or mobile device.

Each device/computer with a
display within your field of view,
all the while wearing a wrist watch
in a room with a clock on
the wall.

So, maybe the end of time is not really
here but what about clocks and watches?

Maybe, clocks & watches are going the
way of the newspaper and magazines.

How many different ways to we need to know it's 6:00PM EST?

New York
